What’s the Queen’s Commerce Admission Average?

In order to get accepted to Queen’s Commerce, you need a strong admission average.

Queen’s Commerce is a selective program, so to give you a better sense of how to maximize your chance of acceptance, let’s investigate the Queen’s Commerce academic averages of accepted and enrolled students in the program.

The majority of accepted students to Queen’s Commerce have an admission average between 90-94%, while a smaller portion of people fall into higher or lower percentage ranges.

The graph below shows the admission averages for Queen’s Commerce from 2009-2016.

The Importance of Admission Averages

Hard numbers don’t tell the whole story. In the past years, the program director of Queen’s Commerce influenced admissions, which resulted in some changes in terms of the overall importance of grades.

From 2006-2013 Shannon Goodspeed directed the program. During this time, she experimented with the ideal academic blends of her class. For instance, in 2011, the application process seemed less strict in terms of grades as 31% of accepted students had between a 85-89% average. Some students actually had an average between 80-84%, below the reported minimum average of 87%.

After 2011, the number of students in the lower 85-89% range lowered again as Goodspeed found an ‘ideal’ class mix.

When Lori Garnier took over in 2014, she kept to this formula in her first year. However, in 2015, she placed a much stronger emphasis on grades. Suddenly about 1/3 of the admitted students had a 95+% average and roughly 1/6 of students were below 90%.

Grades are Increasingly Important for Admission

Since 2015, grades matter more than ever in Queen’s Commerce admissions.

In the past, as long as applicants met the 87% cutoff, they had a roughly equal chance of acceptance as others. Since 2015, this has no longer been true.

As Queen’s gets more applicants (about 7,000 a year!), the selection process has become harder. In 2014 the mean admission percentage was 91.7% and just two years later, the mean admission percentage increased to 92.7%

This means that if you really want to get into Queen’s Commerce, it’s important to focus on your grades and try to have an overall percentage of 92% or higher.
