How Many People Apply to Queen’s Commerce?

Queen’s Commerce receives almost 7,000 applications per year, as officially reported from the Ontario University Application Centre (OUAC).

Over the past decade, the number of applications for Queen’s Commerce has increased steadily.

In fact, while many other business programs in Canada and abroad have seen a decline of applicants, Queen’s Commerce’s numbers have continued to grow.

From 2014-2018, the overall program had an average annual growth rate of 7%, which makes it the 5th fastest growing business program in Ontario.

It takes a few years for the OUAC to collect and report actual data, so I have extrapolated the 2017 and 2018 data in the graph below from earlier years.

The Smith School of Business, however, reports that they receive nearly 8,000 applications

Using this number, we can estimate the following breakdown of Queen’s Commerce applications:

  • 1,850 are Ontario applicants with Queen’s Commerce as their first choice
  • 900 are non-Ontario applicants with Queen’s Commerce as their first choice
  • 5,250 are all other applicants (Ontario and non-Ontario) with Queen’s Commerce as a second choice or more

You might be wondering why so many business programs, unlike Queen’s, are seeing a decline in applicants. Part of this is because there’s such a huge push for students to pursue STEM fields. Because of this, many students see business as a secondary or less important option than STEM programs.

Recently, science and engineering programs in Canada have grown 7% annually, whereas business has only grown 1%.

Despite the push for students to pursue STEM programs, Queen’s Commerce has continued to grow. Its annual growth rate of 7% indicates what an excellent program it is.

In fact, 98% of job-seeking graduates from the program are employed within 6 months of graduation.

Here’s a quote from one of our clients:

“I have absolutely no regrets working with [Youthfully]. It made the process of applying to universities a lot less stressful and made me consider things I never would have considered mentioning in my essays. I was accepted to Queen’s Commerce and Western Ivey. 10/10 would recommend this to anyone applying!”
